PhD defence in Sweden

The director of the ITRC was opponent to the first doctoral defence from tourism studies in Sweden late last month. Tourism has indeed been the topic of numerous PhD dissertations in Sweden, mainly from geography and business departments. Patrick Brouder’s PhD is however the first from a tourism studies department.

Patrick Brouder defended his PhD dissertation on May 28th at Mid Sweden University in Östersund. Mid Sweden University was the first of Swedish Universities to offer a PhD programme in tourism studies and Patrick the first to graduate there from. Patrick’s dissertation deals with innovation and entrepreneurship in tourism development in peripheral regions, with case studies from Sweden. The defence went well and the unanimous verdict of a three person evaluation committee was that he should pass, after an almost two hour debate with the opponent and the audience.
