Cruise passenger survey - Reykjavík 2023

Skemmtiferðaskip við Reykjavík @Vera Vilhjálmsdóttir 2023

Cruise passenger survey in Reykjavík the summer of 2023. The survey was conducted by the ITRC for Faxaflóahafnir (Associated Icelandic Ports) on the initiative of the Icelandic Tourist Board.
The premise of the survey was to gain knowledge on passengers' travels and expenses on shore in the light of rapid rise in cruise ship arrivals in recent years, a trend that is expected to continue in the coming years.
In Iceland, as elsewhere in the Arctic, the increase in arrivals is most evident from cruise ships on round-trips in the Arctic region where cruises on such voyages have in recent years become larger in terms of both numbers and tonnages and therefore also in number of passengers.

Reykjavík's position and service capacity have made it the ideal service point for Arctic cruises. Aviation connections through Keflavík have also resulted in an increase in the number of ships starting and/or ending Arctic round-trips in Reykjavík. This means that more and more passengers travel to and/or from the country by flight in connection with their cruiseing.

Survey results show that passengers are most satisfied with Reykjavík as a place to visit and they make good use of the various services available. The survey also shows that the expenditures of passengers arriving and/or leaving the country by flight is much higher than the general cruise ship passengers.

The project was lead by Guðrún Þóra Gunnarsdóttir [gudrunthora@rmf.is] and Þórný Barðadóttir [thorny@rmf.is].

A summary of the results can be seen here (Icelandic only).
