Impact of energy production on tourists' experience - Blanda and Þjórsá areas

Surveyor from the ITRC in action at a survey site in 2017 ©Auður H IngólfsdóttirThe aim of the research is to assess impact of power plants and related infrastructures on the experience of tourists at natural sites. Data was gathered through questionnaire at sites during the summer of 2024.

Findings were analysed and compared to recent surveys conducted at several sites of power production. These include surveys carried out by the ITRC in the summer of 2017 at Krafla, Þeistareykir and Hengill. Results were furthermore examined in comparison with a survey conducted at Blanda area in 2016, as well as surveys from 2015, conducted at seven locations for consideration in the Icelandic Master Plan for Nature Protection and Energy Utilization.

The 2024 survey at Blanda and Þjórsá areas was conducted for Landsvirkjun – the National Power Company of Iceland and completed with two reports (in Icelandic) in December 2024.
